The Department of the Treasury

Treasury is the Australian Government’s lead economic adviser.

Our role is to Predict and analyse policy issues with a whole of economy view. We understand government and stakeholder circumstances and quickly respond to changing events and directions. We work with state and territory governments on key economic, business and social policy, and manage federal financial relations.

We provide advice to the Australian Government and implement policies and programs to achieve strong and sustainable economic and fiscal outcomes for Australians on issues such as:

  • the economy
  • Budget
  • taxation
  • the financial sector
  • foreign investment
  • structural policy
  • superannuation
  • small business
  • housing
  • international economic policy
  • climate and energy.

Our workforce

We’re committed to growing and maintaining a safe, inclusive and welcoming work environment for all staff.

We recognise that Treasury can best serve Australia and its people when our workforce represents the community which we serve. This is why our employees come from all walks of life, and all corners of the Australian community.

When working at Treasury you will see first-hand how valuing our staff’s different perspectives, experiences, backgrounds and skills enable us to better achieve our department’s goals.

We strongly believe that diversity in our teams further enhances our creativity, innovation and improves problem solving.

The Treasury Graduate Development Program

As a Treasury graduate, you’ll gain exposure working in several areas of the department. You’ll get to work on policies that help shape the future and make a difference for all Australians.

Our graduate program runs over 2 years with most graduates based in our Canberra office. Graduates may also be placed in our Sydney and Melbourne offices. You will complete 8-month rotations in 3 different work areas to develop your skills, knowledge and confidence as an influential employee of the Australian Public Service.

During the program you will access several face-to-face learning and development opportunities. Interstate graduates will travel to Canberra for learning and development, and networking activities. You will also get to work with and learn from experts.

You will have opportunities to get involved with our many employee networks and connect with graduates from other departments.

Graduate rotations will be in areas such as:

  • fiscal, tax and social policy
  • law, legislation and regulatory policy
  • market conduct and consumer data policy
  • macroeconomic modelling and data analysis
  • foreign investment
  • financial services
  • small business
  • domestic and international economic conditions
  • housing
  • climate and energy.

Our program is open to all university students who have graduated in the last 5 years.

You may want to work for us if you have a degree in one of the following disciplines:

Indigenous Affirmative Measure

If you are hired as part of the Indigenous Affirmative Measure recruitment round, you will take part in our graduate program which includes 3 work rotations and specialist university facilitated development workshops and other activities including coaching and mentoring.

Learning and development

During the program, you will have access to bespoke face-to-face learning and development opportunities including university-facilitated development workshops with a mix of academic professionals and Treasury subject matter experts.

Learning and development opportunities include:

  • Six 2-day external university facilitated workshops each year
These workshops equip you with theoretical and practical approaches to help in your day-to-day work.
  • Four peer coaching sessions each year
The sessions are facilitated by an external coach who offers guidance and support on how to best approach work and team-based matters.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Everyone is invested in your learning and development.
  • The culture at the treasury is second to none. There are numerous development opportunities and consistent feedback. The graduate team truly cares about the graduates and there is significant training and efforts put into the program The salary is fairly decent compared to the private sector and numerous flexibilities within the department
  • You are immediately able to begin working on projects that will shape Australia.
  • The Treasury empowers staff at lower levels with exposure to policy/strategic issues.
  • It is hard not to compare yourself with your cohort (everyone is running their own race), the parking is expensive and the Treasury is not near any restaurants or take away other than the cafà within treasury. Just by nature of the role, Canberra is just so expensive to live in. However, Canberra is really well located for exploring and traveling.
  • Having to move to Canberra is probably the most unsettling aspect, but the independence itself is an experience and growth opportunity in itself. Rent is the worst.
  • The grad program is a great way to enter into the APS and get heaps of support and development, but there's less certainty in where you get to go.
  • The Treasury is a dynamic work environment that requires flexibility at times, including weekends.
