Model-Based Systems Engineering Intern

Why This is an Exciting Role:

The BIA SITR Digital Engineering team is looking for a talented Model-Based Systems Engineering Intern to join the team for the Summer of 2024. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in applying MBSE principles to a real-world engineering project. The successful candidate will work closely with the experienced engineers to understand the Digital Engineering team's requirements and objectives, as well as the following:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining element-level models and assist in the integration of subsystem models
  •  Assist with modeling architecture diagrams using MBSE tools such as Cameo
  •  Participate in design reviews and contribute to the identification and resolution of technical issues
  •  Learn about the Systems Integration Readiness and Test (SITR) program Digital Engineering execution strategy and products
  • Work in an Agile environment with many moving components and constant requirement changes

As a Model-Based Systems Engineering Intern, you will lead the charge in conceptualizing, developing, and implementing cutting-edge digital solutions to support the Missile Defense Agency in the enhancement of their defense systems. You'll work at the intersection of technology and strategy, leveraging your expertise to drive innovation within mission-critical defense projects.

  • Innovate: Join with the discovery, identification, and evaluation of innovative digital solutions and opportunities that can significantly impact defense capabilities, utilizing insights from education, experience, and technology trends.
  • Product & Process Conception: Envision and develop digital product solutions and processes, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and operational requirements. Develop the full product lifecycle, from conceptualization through to development, delivery, and iterative improvement, adapting to feedback and evolving needs.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Work closely with engineering, design, and cross-functional teams to prioritize, execute, and deliver digital innovations. Integrate with the innovation process, and support coordination with multiple projects to ensure efficient, structured, and agile execution.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate and collaborate across other work departments and with key stakeholders to align innovation efforts with organizational goals and strategies. Strive to be a thought leader, providing insights and guidance on digital innovation.
  • Market and Competitive Analysis: Conduct thorough market discovery and competitive analysis to define unique value propositions for new digital products. Understand and address user needs, filling gaps and differentiating the solutions from competitors.
  • Teamwork: Work with support and direction from the Application Development Team leadership.

About you

Experience and Qualifications:

To be eligible for this demanding position, the ideal candidate should demonstrate the following experience and qualifications:  

Required Education and Years of Experience:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree or above in Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or another related STEM field.
  • Currently enrolled full-time and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college/university and will be enrolled full-time in Fall 2024.

Required Qualifications: ​

  • Knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering.
  • Familiarity with modeling tools such as SysML, Cameo, or similar software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and teamwork abilities.
  • Must be able to work independently and possess the poise and flexibility required to work in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during summer 2024.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship as a condition of employment.  An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Pre-Start is required.
  • This position requires clearing a background check and an enhanced Personal Conflict of Interest (PCI) requirements as a condition for employment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • GMD Program experience.
  • Experience with tools such as SysML, IBM Rhapsody, Cameo, and/or DOORS.
  • Understanding of the Systems Engineering.
  • Knowledge of/worked in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Strong research and presentation skills.
