The Barclays Story

Barclay's ancestry can be traced back to two goldsmith bankers, John Frame and Thomas Gould who started trading in Lombard Street, London in the year 1690. During this time goldsmiths acted as bankers giving out loans to businesses and merchants. The famous name "Barclays'' became associated with the business in 1736, when Freame's son-in-law James Barclay became a partner.

Barclays began its rise to being a banking giant through the amalgamation of several banking businesses such as Bevan, Tritton, Ransom, Bouverie & Co., and Gurney & Co. under the name of Barclay and Company Limited. And, over the years it took even more banks in Britain, Commonwealth Nations and Continental Europe before purchasing the American  Credit Corporation in 1979 and changing the name to Barclays American Corporation. Through this subsidiary, the bank embarked on a program of significant expansion in the United States and continued to set its roots until it became one of the biggest banking institutions in the world.
