The future of Communications

Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF)

Communication is a vital element in any project, turning something complex into something digestible, and ensuring the hard work of our teams doesn’t go unnoticed. Bronwen Jaggers, head of our Communications and Media Branch, knows that at the heart of all communication is people.

‘I love finding out about people, what they do, what makes them tick and what makes ‘things’ work. I really enjoy writing and telling stories. Communications seemed like a great way to be able to do this every day,’ Bronwen said.

‘I began in a graduate program in 1995. In that first year, I worked on government advertising on gun buybacks, on developing a new payments system for an industry levy, and I helped develop and deliver a stakeholder engagement plan for a new government program.’

Communications can be a great way to get exposure to other areas you’re interested in. In Bronwen's experience, it’s all about learning.

‘I don’t think I had specific career goals in mind when I started! I just wanted to learn and to find a role where I could use my university training and my skills,’ Bronwen said.

‘The best advice that I received has been around being authentic to yourself but balancing that with pushing outside of your comfort zone – to seek out new experiences, new teams to work with and learn from, and to make the most of opportunities that come your way.’

The future of the APS goes hand-in-hand with the future of our communication professionals.

‘The APS really does work to improve the wellbeing of all Australians and to advance Australia’s interests. Engaging with people and helping them to contribute to policy design, or to understand how to access government programs or services that can assist them, is a vital part of a healthy democracy. It’s very satisfying to work.’

If you’re looking to start your career in communications the APS is the perfect place.

‘When you choose to work in the APS you are choosing work that makes a difference. Have an open mind about your role and be willing to try a number of jobs so that you can find your niche. Take all the advice you can get but also remember that you have been employed to bring fresh perspectives and what you have learned at university, to our department. We are very happy to have you!’
