Check out the many different apprenticeship, internship, and graduate programs offered in New Zealand's tourism and hospitality industries if you're eager to continue learning but don't enjoy enrolling in full-time classes. These programs will give you the opportunity to keep learning while still enjoying the advantages of working in an operational setting, receiving mentorship from professionals in the field, and receiving a paycheck each week.

This information is intended to inform educators and domestic New Zealand students about industry-supported study and job opportunities in the tourism sector. Note that some people graduate. After COVID, internship and apprenticeship programs might not exist.

 

Graduate Programmes

InterContinental Hotels Group - IHG

Future Leader Aspire Programme: Anyone committed to a career in hospitality leadership will be ready for their next step, a management job, with the help of our accelerated curriculum. Students who meet the minimum requirements can apply, but they must have at least one of the following: a university degree in hospitality and no prior work experience; a university degree and six months of relevant experience (supervisor level experience is preferred); or no degree and twelve months of relevant experience (supervisor level preferred). Students must also have strong business acumen, be proactive, exhibit initiative, and thrive on challenges. They must also exhibit excellent leadership abilities, excellent communication skills, and a willingness to seek out opportunities to learn and grow. Additionally needed are a strong command of the English language (both written and verbally), as well as the legal ability to work where the Future Leader Aspire position is located. The curriculum lasts 18 months, however, good performance allows for early graduation after only 12 months. It consists of the following elements:

  • rotating around all hotel departments can help you develop your reputation and knowledge of how hotels operate.
  • choosing a concentrated course for hotel operations as a field of expertise
  • strengthening leadership skills and hotel performance while following a leadership learning pathway
  • input on a regular basis on suitability for management positions

  • being qualified and helped to seek for a full-time manager post after completion

Future Leader Embark Programme: In as little as six months, this fast-track program advances frontline hotel staff members to the status of hotel supervisor. Here, students can apply. The following elements make up the program:

  • rotation across every hotel department to develop expertise and knowledge of how a hotel runs
  • rotating through a specialization—for example, front desk work, food and beverage service, or housekeeping—to deepen the experience
  • developing leadership abilities and behaviours by following a leadership learning pathway
  • being assisted by a top hotel executive in my capacity as a program coach

Academy: This top-notch training program is available to determine and enthusiastic people from all backgrounds who wish to start their careers in hospitality. With the aim of obtaining the employment and life skills necessary to launch a career with one of the largest hotel organizations in the world, committed to providing True Hospitality, programs range from work-experience placements, internship possibilities, and apprenticeships.

Hilton

University Programmes and Campus Recruitment: This educational opportunity gives students the ability to learn about the hospitality, integrity, and enthusiasm of Hilton and is designed to increase awareness and understanding of the opportunities and benefits of a career in hospitality. At the start of each academic term, the best students from the Asia/Pacific core school alliance will be chosen to attend the Hilton School for Hospitality Management. Students can apply here.

Accor

Inspire: By providing a leadership development program to accelerate their careers and develop them into the hospitality professionals of tomorrow, this initiative gives up-and-coming talent the chance to join Accor's Our Group. Participants get major responsibility for 12 to 18 months as their leadership skills are developed. Candidates have two options when applying: specialization to improve their skills by working in departments with a particular concentration, or a cross-exposure structure, rotating between different departments across the property and moving into a focus area of interest. A Peer Ambassador, a Property Project, networking opportunities, and a Personal Mentor are other program components. Although all applicants will be taken into consideration, post-secondary degree in business or hospitality is regarded as a benefit. Air New Zealand

Graduate Programme: This two-year program provides graduates with a diverse, exciting, and supportive environment designed to develop both technical and behavioral capabilities and position them to succeed as future leaders of Jetstar. It is for those who are passionate about aviation and providing great travel experiences for customers. The curriculum offers two streams, each of which has four different rotations. Students in each stream will have a variety of possibilities, such as leading projects, working with various business units, presenting to senior stakeholders, conducting analysis, implementing new initiatives, and participating in community and inclusion projects. Travel both within the country and abroad is also possible. The available streams are:

  • Generalist: providing the chance to become familiar with various areas of the organization (engineering, flight operations, airport services, customer experience, product and digital marketing, safety, people and communications, operational support).
  • Spending time in the finance function while also applying analytical abilities to other business activities like IT, Networks, or Digital.

Park Hyatt Auckland

Corporate Management Trainee Program: For hospitality students who are committed to delivering effective service and meaningful experiences, this intensive 12- to 18-month program is the ideal way to gain firsthand knowledge of all aspects of hotel operations and launch a fast-paced career with Hyatt Hotels. The program includes rotations through different hotel departments, with a primary focus on the F&B or Rooms Division, followed by a concentrated period of time in the Concent Every six months, trainees will take part in formal performance reviews. IHG

Work Experience Programme: This one- to two-week training involves assisting IHG coworkers with daily chores while monitoring IHG colleagues. You'll get the chance to network with exceptional professionals and learn more about job opportunities in the hospitality sector. Countdown

SEEDS (Students Entering Employment Developing Skills) Gateway Programme: Making decisions about what they want to do after high school can be difficult for many young Kiwis. The Countdown SEEDS program was launched in 2018 to assist. SEEDS, which is provided in collaboration with ServiceIQ, places secondary school students in Countdown shops for genuine, worthwhile work experience, allowing them to develop useful skills and knowledge. Auckland Council

Internship Programme: This three-month, full-time summer internship is available to students who are halfway through their degree program in a related field from November through February. Options for internship programs include:

Internship: Through this practical course, students can observe how one of the biggest hotel chains operates. The exceptional executives at IHG will lead and encourage you every step of the way, and you'll experience the warmth, respect, and welcome that come with working there. You'll go home knowing that working at IHG can set you up for a career with a wide range of opportunities. Candidates must be enrolled in classes at or just graduated from an institution that is recognized as such. Depending on their area of interest and the requirements of their courses, they may concentrate on one position or alternate across departments. After successfully completing their internships, interns will be able to apply for full-time positions and will also be involved in projects that directly affect the operation of the hotel. Depending on the course and prerequisites, the program might take anywhere from two weeks to twelve months. One of the biggest businesses in New Zealand, Foodstuffs North Island, provides internships to students majoring in business, engineering, information technology, supply chain management, project management, or any other related field who have a strong interest in the FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) sector. Internship: Students in the Auckland area who are required to conduct a real-world internship as part of their studies are welcome to apply to Park Hyatt Auckland. Roles can only be given as they become available. Students who perform well during their internship placement may receive job offers. Up to NZMA Level 4 equivalent, Park Hyatt employees are allowed to pursue industry-supported tertiary degrees at their own pace and still maintain full-time employment. Apprentice Programmes

Real Journeys

Wisdom Workers: After the Navy, Real Journeys is New Zealand's second-largest maritime training employer. The supporting workbook is fully customized to Real Journeys and incorporates both internal learning material and industry Standard Operating Procedures. Its Wisdom Workers program enables young employees to train with qualified skippers and obtain a Qualified Deck Crew, Master's Assistant, and Onboard Passenger Services ticket from Maritime NZ. Two Maritime NZ examiners who are also Real Journeys skippers and six NZQA-qualified workplace-assessors check, monitor, and mentor crew development throughout training. For 4x personnel who have been identified as potential launch masters, Real Journeys is now testing a Skipper Restricted Limits training; this program might be made available later. Service IQ and Employer

Service IQ Apprenticeship Programme: Apprenticeships have a track record of helping both employers and people create highly effective skills and competence in the workplace. Applicants must be employed in a related service industry and have their employer endorse their application in order to be eligible. Non-residents may apply as long as they have a 2-year work visa and are employed full-time in the relevant industry.

A pay subsidy is available in many industries through the government's apprentice support program. Employers will receive $500 per month for apprentices in their second year of training and $1,000 per month for trainees in their first year. The training period for current apprentices must have been under 24 months. The maximum duration of the Apprenticeship Boost program is 20 months beginning in August 2020. that an apprentice can receive is $16,000. Whether an apprentice has just begun training or is nearing the conclusion of their first two years, employers can apply for Apprenticeship Boost. Countdown

Butchery or Bakery: At Countdown, you get the chance to train to be a qualified butcher or baker while earning money. Countdown partners with excellent outside providers, expanding the extensive support network you will have during your apprenticeship and enabling you to acquire specialized knowledge and experience. Students will receive tailored learning resources, specific development goals, and work assessments from the ServiceIQ coordinator, who also keeps their school informed of progress.   • Bakery Apprentice: Possibility of obtaining a Level 4 National Certificate in Baking. Ideal for those who enjoy doing hands-on creative work and understanding a little bit of science. No day is the same because there is so much diversity between creating breads, coming up with new bakery items, and designing and decorating a variety of cakes and muffins. There are countless opportunities for learning. The apprenticeship combines on-the-job evaluations with materials for distance learning.
  • Earn a National Certificate in Meat Retailing (Proficient) Level 3 as a butchery apprentice to develop the superior skills and methods necessary to produce goods of the highest caliber. Butchery demands not just physical prowess and accuracy, but also communication and presenting abilities.

Food Stuffs

Development Programme: Over 22,000 people work for Foodies (Foodstuffs North Island), a company that has grown to include nearly 350 PAK'n'SAVE, New World, Four Square, and Gilmours locations throughout the North Island. One of the biggest corporations in New Zealand, Foodstuffs North Island, has concentrated on developing a variety of customized training and development courses and programs to support employees in realizing their potential. Foodstuffs runs produce, deli, and seafood training programs and is the largest provider of butcher and baker training in New Zealand. Park Hyatt Auckland

Culinary and F&B Apprenticeship: For Auckland-area hospitality students, Park Hyatt Auckland is currently creating culinary and food and beverage apprenticeship programs. These will be put into place in 2021, and after an apprentice program has been successfully completed, successful students can be given job offers. Up to NZMA Level 4 equivalent, Park Hyatt employees are allowed to pursue industry-supported tertiary degrees at their own pace and still maintain full-time employment. NZSki

Rookie Programme: The Rookie program is made to get you started on the path to becoming a qualified ski or snowboard instructor. The program is intended for NZ or Australian citizens or residents who are inspired to follow one of the best and original pathways to becoming a qualified Snowsports Instructor. It is led by highly experienced trainers. A 2-day Rookie Instructor Hiring Clinic is the initial step, after which you will be given a full-time seasonal position with NZSki at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables (or probably both), or Mt Hutt Snowsports Schools as a "Rookie" Instructor. You will be prepared for success in your NZSIA or SBINZ Level 1 Certification thanks to the ongoing training and teaching opportunities, and you'll have the chance to advance to Level 2 Certification in the same or the following season. Rookie instructors can work 3-5 hours per day and are employed from 21 June to 26 September 2021 (or longer, if available). To aid in development, rookies should practice on snow as often as they can outside of class time. Instructors must be able to complete the SBINZ or NZSIA Level 1 Certification in order to participate in the 2021 NZSki Rookie program. The primary qualities that NZSki are seeking for include advanced expertise in skiing or riding, as well as communication, empathy, connection skills, and team focus. After completing the 2-day clinic, trainers will certify NZSki Rookies as "ready to give excellent customer experiences" and "ready to teach First Timers, learner/novice levels, and school groups." Each new Rookie's NZSIA or SBINZ Level 1 Certification course will be paid for by NZSki, and NZSki Snowsports staff will receive a 50% discount if they move on to NZSIA or SBINZ Level 2 courses the same year.
